NFL announces compensatory draft picks

The NFL has announced the inclusion of 32 compensatory draft picks for the 2012 NFL Draft, awarded to 15 teams.

The NFL awards these compensatory picks based on free agents a team has lost the previous season, versus free agents that team has signed.

In a nutshell, a team like the Green Bay Packers that do not sign many high profile free agents, but does have them signed by other teams, comes away with 4 compensatory picks, giving them a total of 12 draft picks in the 2012 draft, and that's just the way a team like the Packers likes it, they build through the draft.

The table to the left lists all the extra picks awarded by the NFL to the 15 teams that lost in free agency prior to the 2011 season.

Breaking it down further, I have also listed the teams and the number of picks they have gained.

Teams - picks gained
New York Giants - 1 pick
Dallas Cowboys - 1 pick
Carolina Panthers - 1 pick
Atlanta Falcons - 1 pick
San Diego Chargers - 1 pick
Buffalo Bills - 1 pick
St. Louis Rams - 1 pick
Minnesota Vikings - 2 picks
Baltimore Ravens - 2 picks
Oakland Raiders - 3 picks
Indianapolis Colts - 3 picks
Pittsburgh Steelers - 3 picks
Green Bay Packers - 4 picks
New York Jets - 4 picks
Cleveland Browns - 4 picks

For those teams not on this list, the NFL did not award them any picks, determining that the free agents these teams signed had more value than the ones they lost.

  1. this is BS.. they should award theses picks to any team.. really the Jets, packers, steelers and Giants they are all power teams that still gained from free agencies and i dont see how you can classify one player is better then another. example the dolphins the got rid of marshall and bell 2 top players in the nfl and got a draft pick and Garrard for them if thats the case they should have been awarded picks..this is a bs nfl way to give other teams an advantage and bring them money..this should be taken away or divided up between all the teams not just 15..

    1. Since the Dolphins got Garrard this year, they will get extra compensatory picks in 2013

  2. Thing is, all these teams lost players to free agency last season, and that is what these picks are based on.
