Sources not even remotely close to the league have confirmed that the Detroit Lions have traded starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and three first round draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts for the #1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
Stafford was drafted #1 overall in 2009, and had a rough first two years with the Lions. In 2011, Stafford started all 16 games, leading the Lions to 10 wins and the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. He threw for 5,038 yards with 41 touchdowns and a 97.2 quarterback rating.
During the owners meetings it was discovered that the salary cap will not see a substantial increase in 2014 when the new TV contracts are done, and sources close to Ford Field, in a nearby Taco Bell, tell me that the Lions were concerned about the future impact of his contract on the team. Other sources at the local YMCA have told me that the Lions are planning on installing hot tubs in the private booths, and they wanted to free up capitol. While this has nothing to do with the salary cap, it is an interesting theory.
The Lions will also give up the #23 pick in the first round this year, the first round pick in 2013, and the first round pick in 2014, along with the third and fourth round picks this year.
As yet another part of the deal, confirmed by a parking lot attendant in Indianapolis, Calvin Johnson will have to sign autographs for all Colts fans during the regular season, in his spare time. When I didn't ask Jim Schwartz about this, his response wasn't "Calvin doesn't need to practice, he'll be good to go for the regular season".
The thinking among those not close to the situation is that the Lions will use the #1 pick to draft Trent Richardson, the best running back in the 2012 draft.
Shaun Hill will become the Lions starting quarterback for the 2012 season. Hill threw three passes in 2011, all very effective and laser-like.
All of this staggering news comes on April 1st, a day of big events in history, from the most famous picture ever taken of the Loch Ness Monster to now what appears to be the biggest trade ever to not happen.
