Great Falls Police Sgt. Dean Bennett, who confirmed Leaf's arrest, said Friday night that he had not seen the police report containing the allegations.
Leaf was booked on felony charges of burglary of a residence and criminal possession of dangerous drugs, plus a first-time charge of misdemeanor theft, and later freed on $76,000 bond and is scheduled to make a court appearance Monday.
Leaf was the No. 2 pick in the 1998 NFL draft behind Peyton Manning. But Leaf flamed out as quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, gaining a reputation as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.
Leading up to that 2008 draft, most experts had Ryan Leaf rated higher than Peyton Manning because of his arm and higher potential for growth. Colts president Bill Polian and manager Jim Mora picked Manning #1 overall, going against the Colts scouts, who thought Leaf had greater potential. A big factor in that decision was that Leaf had failed to show up for his interview with the Colts, also an indicator of things to come in his future in the NFL.
Leaf was drafted by the San Diego Chargers #2 overall, and was cut after three seasons. His time with the Chargers was marked by incidents with reporters and fans, a poor work ethic, and injuries.
In his NFL career, Leaf completed 317 of 655 passes, throwing for 3,666 yards and 14 touchdowns against 36 interceptions. He had a QB rating of 50 and a completion percentage of 48.4.
